The Haynes Lunar Rover Owners’ Workshop Manual contains a foreword by Apollo 15 Commander David R Scott. This Haynes Lunar Rover users manual covers the Lunar Rover from 1971-1972 and tells the complete story of the lunar vehicle that cost over $38 million to manufacture. It begins with early drawings, all the way to the

International Space Station Workshop Manual Book Review

This is another excellent Haynes astronomy manual. Haynes has produced several astronomy titles including the Lunar Module and the Space Shuttle. The author David Baker worked with NASA on the Gemini, Apollo and Shuttle programme between 1965 and 1990. His work has put him in good stead to write this ISS book. Don’t worry this

Categories: Astronomy Books

The Cambridge Photographic Moon Atlas covers 69 regions of the lunar landscape in large format images with corresponding charts. The book itself contains 388 high-resolution photographs of the lunar surface. The Cambridge Photographic Moon Atlas is not just an atlas though, the book begins with a great data section on the moon and the introduction

Apollo 11 Owners Manual Book Review

Posted on: June 15, 2016 /
Categories: Astronomy Books

The Haynes Apollo 11 Owners Manual is an intriguing book and one of the first Haynes books to move away from the automotive sector. Don’t expect pages and pages of cross sectional diagrams of the Apollo 11 module and Saturn V rocket. There is much more to this book than that. The first thing that

Last night I did a quick couple of talks at the Cambridge Astronomy Association on lunar imaging and widefield imaging using a Geoptik CCD to lens adaptor. The lunar imaging talk covered the top 10 tips when lunar imaging, a demo of stacking a lunar video using Autostakkert and Registax. I then also talked about

Transit of Mercury 2016

Posted on: May 9, 2016 /
Categories: The Sun

Today was the transit of Mercury 2016. I had two set-ups today – my Coronado Ha PST telescope with my ASI120-MMS camera in it and my Meade 127mm refractor with a white light filter on it, on this scope I tried my Atik 460 and Canon DSLR but none of these images came out that

On Saturday I did another talk for the Cambridge Young Astronomers. This months topic was covering the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram and explaining all the different star types within it. I was given A and F type stars for my talk. I started by looking at the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram and then gave facts on A and F

This is a book review of Building and using Binoscopes by Norman Butler. If you love observing the heavens and have ever tried using a binoviewer then you will know how building a binoscope would be the next logical step. Binoviewers are binocular type contraptions that fit into your telescope viewer and provide you with

Moon taken with ASI120 and Meade 127

Posted on: March 16, 2016 /
Categories: The Moon

This is part of the moon I took using my 127mm Meade telescope and an ASI120MM-S camera. There was a fair bit of atmospheric turbulence, but without using any amplification the moons surface seemed quite still. The ASI120 camera at full pixel size does use a lot of disk space when recording at anything over
